General info

Studies using human tissue for identification and validation of novel targets, for setting up ex vivo testing systems and biomarker discovery are being performed more frequently in both academic and industry research. In addition, numerous random attempts have been made to use human material to improve drug discovery paradigms that are currently being incorporated into the novel strategies.

The intention of the FIT 2016 meeting is to bring together various individuals who use patient samples as an integral part of their work (basic and drug discovery scientists, clinicians, as well as legal/regulatory representatives) and to exchange their experiences of best practices, success stories and disappointments.

Meeting Overview

Day 1

Day 2

Setting the Scene

“Unconferencing” – participant driven meeting

(take a lead – post a topic or question)

  • Talks

  • Group discussions – topics proposed by attendees
  • Posters

  • Show and tell – great project or something to show

  • My big (or little) question – the question you want to know answer to

Tentative Programme

Three thematic sessions (lectures, posters and discussion workshops):

  • Patient samples in drug discovery

    • Overview of the field and general principles

    • Legal aspects and EU rules and regulations

    • Presentations on successful and less successful real life examples

  • Target and biomarker identification and validation

    • Various state of the art techniques and technologies used for target and biomarker discovery and validation (e.g. chemoproteomics, CRISPR, etc.) – with special accent on case studies

  • Compound profiling in phenotypic assays

    • Cell lines vs. primary cells vs. co-cultures vs. tissue explants
